2 min readKansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has had lots of success in the league in a very short time. The signal caller was drafted by the Chiefs in the 2017 NFL Draft and has been nothing short of sensational since being named the starter prior to the 2018 season. Through his play on the field he’s shown that he’s one of the best in the game today, which likely has a few veteran quarterbacks wondering just how he’s been able to accomplish what he has in a short span of time.
While we’re not sure exactly what his secret is, we do know that Mahomes has one habit he does probably more than anyone else who plays the game of football. Read on to find out what that is and if it’s harmful or beneficial.
What Mahomes does several times a day
So what does the athlete do more than most people on the planet? He naps, a lot.
“Patrick is the most prolific sleeper in professional sports,” Mahomes’ trainer, Bobby Stroupe, told The Washington Post. “He gets 10 hours of sleep a night and naps all day. There’s not even another species that does that, outside of lions, I think. … If sleeping was on a video game, he’d be rated 100.”
Stroupe thinks all that rest was key in Mahomes’ healing process after he dislocated his kneecap during a game against the Denver Broncos. Almost immediately the trainers worked to pop his kneecap back into place.
“Literally every second it takes you to put that kneecap back in can translate into weeks,” Stroupe said before adding, “They were so on top of it.”
The injury could have kept Mahomes sidelined for a significant amount of time instead, he only missed two weeks.
Is napping generally good for you?
Now some Chiefs fans are wondering if all that napping is good for the star quarterback and future of the franchise.
According to research gathered by Texas A&M University Health and Science Center, there are some health benefits to taking naps during the day but there are also a number of risks.
On the positive side brief naps can reduce fatigue, increase a person’s alertness, and improve one’s mood as well as their cognitive performance. But excessive napping for long periods of time can pose four major health issues.
Napping for more than a half an hour during the day can lead to serious problems such as cardiovascular disease and metabolic syndrome, which increases a person’s risk for heart attack and stroke. Other studies found that napping for more than an hour can increase the risk of type 2 diabetes by 50% and cardiovascular disease by as much as 82%.
Whatever Mahomes is doing though is working. And fans can rest assure that Stroupe, the conditioning coaches, and other staffers within the Chiefs organization will continue to make sure he stays on the right track in order to continue his dominance on the football field.
